Milazzo

If you think of Sicily what comes to your mind? I think of the sea, with its crystalline waters, beaches, nature with its colors and scents. I think of the blue sky, the most beautiful sunsets of my life, the starry nights and above all its food. Here, Milazzo is all this, a city that does not expect anything, and often the beauty lies in simplicity.

Milazzo is a small peninsula about 8 km long, being a small spit of land, it is fortunate to be surrounded by the sea, facing west on the Gulf of Patti (Mar di Ponente), to the east the Gulf of Milazzo (Mar di Levante). A stay in Milazzo allows you to discover and savor the beauty of an authentic Sicily, not yet contaminated by mass tourism.

From Afternoon to Night

In the afternoon, when the sun is about to set, you cannot miss the spectacle of the sunset while enjoying an happy hour and beautiful music in one of the beaches located along the western coast di Ponente.

Milazzo is a destination also known for its legendary very active and lively nightlife, which is distributed between the clubs of the Borgo Antico and the clubs of the lower part of the city. The most popular ones are located in the quadrilateral between Marina Garibaldi,  Piazza Caio Duilio, the old fish market and the port.

For those who prefer to stay on the west coast, the offer of catering and entertainment is not lacking at the shores of the coast.

Where to go to the sea?

Ponente Beach

Probably the most famous of the beaches of Milazzo, and also among the most popular and equipped, made up of small white and smooth pebbles. The sea is like a postcard, a beach for all ages and for all tastes, suitable both for those seeking relaxation and for those who want fun.

Sikelia is only 100 meters from one of the most beautiful parts of the west coast with a free beach, or for the more demanding, there is the possibility to go to the nearest equipped beach Pizzeria Ristorante (Lido la Fenice) just 350 meters away, reachable on foot or by car with the possibility of free public parking.

Surely the most awaited spectacle is the sunset.

Piscine di Venere

The name is already a whole program. It is a body of water nestled between jagged rocks that reach the sea and almost seem to embrace it. The Piscine di Venere can be reached via a walking path from Capo Milazzo and once you arrive, the spectacle is incomparable.

Croce di Mare

For the inhabitants of Milazzo, this is the oldest bathing resort ever, and in many cases also their favorite. Croce di Mare is a very varied beach: one stretch is sandy while another is characterized by the presence of pebbles, and towards the end there are rocks. It is right on one of the rocks that there is the small statue of a Madonnina. We advise you to take a seat from the early hours of the morning so that you can admire the spectacle of the sunrise.

Beaches on the Rocky Shoreline

On the rocky coast that represents the tip of the "Aeolian Peninsula" there are several beaches, some reachable from the sea, others reachable through land routes such as Baia della Renella or Baia Paradiso.

Our advice is to rent a boat and spend a whole day on these heavenly beaches.

What see?

Panoramic Road

Drive along this panoramic road overlooking the Levante sea. You will be accompanied by the scent of the Mediterranean scrub and the "song" of cicadas. At the beginning of the overview, stop for a short stop at the small beach of Croce di Mare. Continuing along the road once you arrive at the curve of Contrada Paradiso, I recommend that you stop in the small clearing and admire the intense blue of the sea from above.Following the road after a short while, you will reach Capo Milazzo.

Capo Milazzo and the Small Church of Sant'Antonio

Capo MIlazzo is the most extreme point of the Milazzo peninsula. Legend has it that Ulysses met Polyphemus here. A certainly suggestive place on which the Faro del Capo stands, on the spectacular cliff that overlooks, among other things, the wonderful Aeolian Islands, from which you can enjoy a fantastic and wonderful panorama immersed in the sea. For those who love natural landscapes, looking at the sea from above and everything underneath is truly a sight not to be missed. The sunset at the Capo is wow !!!

The route starts from the rocky church of Sant'Antonio absolutely worth visiting. Once you get to that point you just have to go down to the piscine di Venere where you can take a nice refreshing bath.

Castle, Fortified Citadel and MUMA

Surely the main attraction of Milazzo is the Castle, where the Fortified Citadel stands inside, it represents one of the most impressive fortified complexes in Europe. It rises at the highest point of a rocky spur overlooking the entire Milazzo peninsula, with a panoramic view that sweeps 360 °. Thanks to its strategic position, this area has always been inhabited for at least 5,000 years. During the Middle Ages the Castle was an integral part of the village, as evidenced by the presence of some churches and the ancient cathedral of the city. Also it is possible  visit the "MuMa Museo del Mare Milazzo" a spiritual journey to rediscover the harmony between man and sea through science and art.

Borgo Antico "Old Village"

The entrance to the village is flanked on both sides by the Spanish Military Quarter (1585-1595).

The lights of the night, the clubs that swarm with tourists and the history that mixes with everyday life, make the Borgo di Milazzo a place of timeless charm.
Ancient houses, one next to the other, which form narrow and characteristic alleys. Stairs close to the premises and lava stones.
In the background is the Castle of Milazzo in all its grandeur. Right from here is the main entrance to the Castle.

Inside the village there are numerous religious buildings, for example the beautiful sanctuary of San Francesco di Paola, built in the fifteenth century. Also in the historic village are the Palazzo dei Vicerè, dating back to the eighteenth century and strongly dominated by the Baroque style, the church of the Madonna del Rosario which until 1783 was the Court of the Inquisition.

Fischermen Village of Vaccarella

This is the fishermen's quarter, the ancient heart of Milazzo that smells of the sea. Along the way there is a strong scent of fresh fish in the morning. Banquets lying on the sidewalk, boats placed among the pebbles of the beach and people who live by the sea, there are still fishermen who mend their nets. There, that freshly caught fish is resold and always there relives those works that have a strong Sicilian accent.

Marina Garibaldi and Piazza Caio Duilio

Piazza Caio Duilio is the historic center of Milazzo, characterized by ancient buildings, the old fish market and a characteristic avenue where the shopping street begins. It is also possible to admire the Church of the Carmine, dating back to the sixteenth century, the facade is a product of the Messina baroque.

The Marina Garibaldi is the reference point for city walks and extends along the Riviera di Levante, from the port to the village of Vaccarella for about 1.5 km. Along the way you will find the Municipality of Milazzo with the Carmine Atrium, Piazza Caio Duilio, the Statue of Luigi Rizzo, the Statue of Liberty and Palazzo d'Amico.

Tourist Port

The construction of the Port of Milazzo dates back to the Bourbon period, precisely to 1843. It is a place to visit especially during evening walks, very characteristic for the moored boats and the magic that each tourist port transmits on warm summer evenings.
